Gateway
Gateway is the point in an apprenticeship at which the training provider and employer confirm that an apprentice has completed all required training and is ready to move into assessment.
At TQUK, gateway acts as a formal checkpoint to ensure apprentices have developed the full range of knowledge, skills, and behaviours set out in the apprenticeship standard.
Preparing for gateway
The gateway process ensures that the apprentice has finished all mandatory components of their programme. This may include completing on-programme qualifications, achieving any required Functional Skills qualifications, producing mandatory work products, or meeting industry-specific requirements.
Providers and employers are responsible for reviewing each requirement and confirming that the apprentice has met them in full. TQUK uses this information to ensure the apprentice is ready for independent assessment and that the assessment accurately reflects their competence.
During gateway, the training provider and employer review the apprentice’s progress against the knowledge, skills, and behaviours outlined in the apprenticeship standard. This involves ensuring the apprentice has had sufficient opportunities to develop their skills in a real working environment and consistently demonstrates occupational competence.
Providers must provide accurate records and evidence to demonstrate the apprentice’s readiness, ensuring the information submitted to TQUK is complete and compliant.
Gateway also involves confirming any access arrangements the apprentice may need. If an apprentice requires reasonable adjustments during assessment, they must be identified and supported with evidence at gateway so TQUK can review and approve the adjustments before the assessment is scheduled.
This ensures that any agreed adjustments comply with regulatory expectations and that the apprentice is assessed fairly without compromising the independence of the process.
Entering gateway
Once gateway checks are complete, providers submit all required documentation to TQUK. This may include:
- evidence logs
- qualification certificates
- Functional Skills results
- project proposals (where required by the standard)
- other mandatory components specific to the occupation.
TQUK then reviews the submission to confirm that gateway requirements have been met. If anything is missing or unclear, TQUK will request further information before the apprentice can be progressed. Only when all requirements have been successfully confirmed will TQUK formally accept the apprentice through gateway.
Gateway is also used to agree on practical details for the assessment itself. This includes confirming the assessment dates, discussing any logistical needs with the employer and ensuring that the apprentice understands what will happen next. By establishing this information early, the process becomes smoother and more predictable for everyone involved.
At TQUK, gateway ensures that apprentices enter assessment at the right time, with the right preparation, and with all compliance requirements met. It supports a fair, consistent, and high-quality assessment experience and helps apprentices move confidently into the next stage of their apprenticeship.
