Understanding National Occupational Standards

National Occupational Standards (NOS) define the skills and knowledge needed for specific job roles. This article explains what NOS are, why they matter, and how they underpin TQUK qualifications.

What are National Occupational Standards?

National Occupational Standards (NOS) are statements of the skills, knowledge, and understanding needed to perform competently in a specific job role. They describe what a person needs to doknow, and understand to carry out a particular function effectively.

NOS are developed by Sector Skills Organisations and approved on a four-nation basis. They represent the agreed benchmark of competence for a particular occupation across the UK.

Why National Occupational Standards matter

NOS are important because they:

  • provide a consistent, UK-wide benchmark for job competence
  • form the foundation for competence-based qualifications such as NVQs and SVQs
  • help employers identify the skills and knowledge their workforce needs
  • support learners in understanding what is required for their chosen career
  • enable training providers to design programmes that meet industry requirements.

NOS and TQUK qualifications

TQUK's competence-based qualifications, including NVQs and other work-based awards, are aligned to National Occupational Standards. This means that when a learner achieves a TQUK qualification, they have demonstrated the skills and knowledge defined in the relevant NOS.

Each unit within a competence-based qualification typically corresponds to one or more NOS.

Using NOS in practice

Centres should use NOS to ensure their training programmes cover all required competencies. When planning assessment, compare your assessment methods against the NOS to confirm they will generate sufficient evidence.

Employers can use NOS to write job descriptions, identify training needs, and benchmark employee performance against national standards.

Learners can review the relevant NOS to understand exactly what competencies they need to develop and demonstrate throughout their qualification.
