Direct Claims Status
Direct Claims Status (DCS) is a recognition awarded to centres that have consistently demonstrated high-quality assessment and internal quality assurance practices over time.
In simple terms, DCS allows a centre to claim certification for learners without requiring routine sampling before every certification claim. This is because the centre has already shown, through a series of successful External Quality Assurance (EQA) reviews, that its assessment decisions are accurate, reliable, and meet the required standards.
DCS helps streamline the certification process while maintaining the quality and integrity of apprenticeship assessment.
Achieving Direct Claims Status
To be considered for DCS, centres must meet quality requirements that demonstrate a strong and consistent approach to assessment and quality assurance.
As a guide, there must be at least 10 completed samples for each apprenticeship standard before DCS can be considered. We will also review the outcomes of previous sampling activities, including any actions that may have been raised. These actions may relate directly to the standard being considered or to other similar standards delivered by the centre.
Reviewing previous actions allows us to identify trends and understand how effectively any issues have been addressed. Where actions have been identified in previous samples, additional sampling may be required before DCS can be awarded.
A positive history of EQA reports is also important. We look for consistent evidence that the centre is meeting requirements and maintaining assessment quality without the need for corrective actions.
Direct Claim Status validity
Once awarded, DCS is valid for 12 months.
To maintain DCS, centres will be sampled as part of their annual EQA visit. This provides an opportunity to review ongoing performance and ensure quality standards continue to be met.
Where a centre has not held DCS for the full 12 months before their annual EQA visit, we will review a proportion of the certification claims made from the date DCS was awarded up to the date of the visit. This ensures that all centres are monitored fairly and proportionately.
Direct Claim Status transfer requests
Centres that already hold DCS for the same apprenticeship standard with another awarding organisation may be eligible to transfer their DCS status.
To request a transfer, the centre should submit a DCS Transfer Request to the EQA Delivery Team, together with a valid and current EQA report from the other awarding organisation.
The report must clearly confirm:
- the apprenticeship standard covered
- the date DCS was awarded
- the DCS expiry date.
If the report is valid and demonstrates that the required standards have been met, the transfer can be approved and the standard can be added to the centre's DCS portfolio.
Following approval, a sample will be conducted during the centre's next annual EQA visit, after which the standard will move into the normal rolling 12-month DCS cycle.
