Multiple-Choice Questions (Awarding)
Multiple-choice Questions (MCQs) are a type of assessment in which learners select one correct answer from a list of options. They feature in both end-point assessments and regulated qualifications, and there are several different ways in which they can be sat.
Examination methods
Remote Online
Learners can take their exams at a time that suits them, without the need for a physical invigilator or a fixed schedule. When ready, learners simply log in to the system and begin their assessment. Throughout the exam, the system records all activity, which can then be reviewed and invigilated by TQUK. For additional information on remote exams, please refer to the remote exams guidance.
Online
Learners sit their assessments online using our bespoke system, which needs to be taken in a controlled setting, invigilated by centre staff who then upload the completed invigilator documents for TQUK to review. For additional information on online exams, please refer to the online exams guidance.
Paper-based
Traditional exams where questions are presented on paper, and answers are written or shaded by hand. This must also be taken in a controlled environment and invigilated by centre staff, who then upload the completed invigilator documents to TQUK for review. Paper-based exams, when requested, are sent securely using WeTransfer to the invigilator 24 hours before the exam date.
Booking an MCQ
Training providers/recognised centres will schedule an MCQ date for the learner. This can be done by offering a date at Gateway or by submitting a resit/reschedule form.
Reasonable adjustments
Reasonable adjustments can be requested and applied to MCQ assessments. Please refer to the TQUK Reasonable Adjustments and Special Considerations Policy for more information. To submit an application, please complete the Reasonable Adjustment form.
Limits on attempts
The number of MCQ attempts permitted depends on the specific standard or qualification that the learner is working toward. Some assessments require the MCQ to be completed before other components, while others must be finished on the same day. Please refer to the assessment guidance for more details.
