Situational Judgement Tests
A Situational Judgement Test (SJT) is a psychometric assessment used within recruitment and qualification processes to evaluate a learner’s judgement, decision-making ability, and professional behaviour.
Learners are presented with realistic workplace scenarios and asked to identify the most appropriate (or least appropriate) response. SJTs assess key competencies such as teamwork, communication, integrity, and professionalism.
The following TQUK standards include an SJT:
- Poultry Technician – 60 minutes
- Children, Young People and Families Manager (within the community) – 120 minutes
- Children, Young People and Families Manager (residential) – 120 minutes
Assessment Methods
Remote online
Learners can complete their assessment at a time convenient to them, without the need for a physical invigilator or fixed schedule.
When ready, learners log into the system and begin their assessment. The platform records all activity throughout the exam, which is later reviewed and invigilated by TQUK.
For further information, please refer to the Remote Exams Guidance.
Online
Learners complete their assessment online using our bespoke system. These exams must be taken in a controlled environment and invigilated by centre staff.
Centres are required to upload completed invigilator documentation for review.
Early Years Education and Early Years Practitioner assessments must be invigilated by TQUK.
For further details, please refer to the Online Exams Guidance
Paper-based
Paper-based assessments follow a traditional exam format, where learners respond to printed questions by writing or shading answers by hand.
These exams must be conducted in a controlled environment and invigilated by centre staff, except for Early Years Education/Early Years Practitioner assessments, which require TQUK invigilation.
Invigilator documentation must be submitted for review.
Upon request, paper-based exam materials are sent securely via WeTransfer to the invigilator 24 hours prior to the scheduled exam date. The documents must be returned as soon as the exam has been completed to exams@tquk.org.
Booking an SJT
Training providers or centres are responsible for scheduling SJT assessments for learners.
Bookings can be made either by offering a date through Gateway or submitting a Resit/Reschedule Form.
Reasonable adjustments
Reasonable adjustments may be requested for SJT assessments. Please refer to our Reasonable Adjustments and Special Considerations Policy and complete the Reasonable Adjustment Form.
Limits on attempts
The number of attempts permitted for an SJT varies depending on the specific standard being undertaken. Please refer to the relevant assessment guidance for detailed requirements.
Some standards require the SJT to be completed before other assessment components, while others require it to be completed on the same day.
